For example, if your idea of heaven is sipping a cocktail while watching the sun set over a tranquil ocean then head to western Florida and the combined hotspots of St Petersburg and Clearwater, close to Tampa. Beautiful beaches on the Gulf of Mexico, along with a laidback pace await visitors. Although the majority of Florida’s largest theme parks are found in Orlando, one major exception is Busch Gardens located just outside Tampa, a one hour drive from Orlando.
Or choose nature. The Everglades National Park is unique; the USA’s largest subtropical swampland wilderness spread over one-fifth of the entire Everglades ecosystem on the Florida panhandle. Designated a World Heritage Site, it is home to many rare and endangered species as well as numerous alligators and attracts many millions of visitors each year. One of the undoubted highlights for many of those visitors is to take a jet boat tour which allows them to get to the heart of the wilderness easily and safely. From the jet boat visitors can catch glimpses of alligators, pink pelicans, turtles and other wildlife that is indigenous to the area.
By way of contrast the area around Kissimmee and Orlando is home to Disney World and a plethora of associated theme parks. The majority of Florida holidays taken by Britons include spending some time here; many of them enjoying their entire holiday in the world’s undisputed theme park heaven. As well as the enormous Disney World with its four theme parks and two water parks, Universal also boasts two parks of its own; Universal Studios and Universal Island of Adventures. In addition, Sea World of Florida offers the option to experience thrill rides and also the chance to get close to marine life, such as killer whales, dolphins and rays.
Lastly, Florida boasts a number of large cities. The largest of them, the state capital of Jacksonville is overshadowed by cosmopolitan Miami when it comes to attracting holidaymakers. Miami, on the Atlantic coast offers an interesting blend of Latin and western cultures, as well as the marvellous South Beach featuring the fabulous art deco Ocean Drive.
Whatever you expect from a summer holiday, you can almost certainly find it in Florida.
